Birmingham, Alabama, has a unique mix of Southern charm, industrial history, and modern vibes. Whether you're a coffee lover, a craft beer enthusiast, or someone who enjoys wandering through antique shops, Birmingham has something for everyone. We hit some fantastic spots during our trip, but like any adventure, there were always a few places we didn't have time to explore. Here's a rundown of our day and some must-visit recommendations for your trip.
Morning Buzz: Coffee Spots to Kickstart Your Day
Our day started with a cup of coffee at Domestique Coffee. This charming coffee shop is a haven for coffee purists. The minimalist vibe inside emphasizes the expertly roasted beans and precise brewing methods. The baristas here are passionate about their craft, and you can taste it in every sip. We enjoyed their pour-over, which was rich and flavorful—a perfect way to start the day.
If you're looking for another excellent coffee option, don't miss East Pole Coffee Co., a local favourite. While we didn't have time to visit this spot during our stay, it's known for its expertly roasted beans and a menu that focuses on the quality of the coffee itself. Next time, it's at the top of our list!
Birmingham’s Industrial Heart: Sloss Furnaces
One of the highlights of our day was visiting the iconic Sloss Furnaces, a National Historic Landmark that gives a glimpse into Birmingham's industrial past. Walking through the towering ironworks is like stepping back, offering a haunting yet beautiful reminder of the city’s steel-making heritage. The massive structures and preserved machinery are captivating, and it’s easy to see why this place is a cultural hub, hosting various events and concerts throughout the year. It was an incredible experience that deepened our understanding of Birmingham's history.
Brewing Up Fun: Birmingham's Craft Beer Scene
Birmingham's craft beer scene is booming, and we had to check out two breweries that locals and tourists rave about.
First up was Back Forty Beer Company. Located in the Sloss Docks area, this brewery offers a wide range of craft beers celebrating Southern flavours. We opted for a flight, which allowed us to taste everything from their signature Naked Pig Pale Ale to the Truck Stop Honey Brown Ale. The outdoor patio was perfect for relaxing and enjoying the afternoon sun, with great views of Birmingham's historic industrial district.
Our next stop was Monday Night Brewing. While its roots are in Atlanta, it's opened a second taproom in Birmingham, and it's quickly become a local favourite. Known for its bold and creative brews, Monday Night's atmosphere is laid-back and fun. If you're a fan of stouts, try the "Drafty Kilt"—a robust scotch ale rich with malty goodness.
Shopping Local: The Normal Brand and Antique Finds
No trip to Birmingham is complete without a bit of shopping. We swung by The Normal Brand for some Southern-inspired fashion that perfectly blends style and comfort. Whether you're looking for soft tees, cozy flannels, or rugged outerwear, this store offers high-quality pieces that fit city life and outdoor adventures. You won't leave empty-handed if you're a fan of effortless, laid-back style. We had a wonderful time meeting Joy, the associate at the store, and I walked out in a cute new outfit! The boys found some things they liked too!

Next, we wandered into a local antique store, the name of which escapes me, but its charm certainly left an impression. Birmingham has a treasure trove of antique shops where you can find everything from mid-century furniture to vintage trinkets and collectibles. It's easy to lose track of time while browsing through the carefully curated aisles—each piece telling its own story.
Hidden Gems We Missed (But You Shouldn't)
While we had a fantastic time in Birmingham, there are a few places we couldn't squeeze into our itinerary but wish we had.
Vulcan Park and Museum | Home to the world's most giant cast iron statue, Vulcan Park offers breathtaking views of the city skyline. The museum delves into Birmingham's rich history, from its industrial roots to its civil rights legacy. This should be high on your list if you love history with a view.
.
Railroad Park | If you want a break from the urban hustle, Railroad Park is a beautiful green space in the city's heart. Whether you're into jogging, picnicking, or just relaxing by the lake, this park offers a serene escape and showcases the beauty of Birmingham's outdoor spaces.
Birmingham Museum of Art | Art lovers shouldn't miss the Birmingham Museum of Art. With over 27,000 pieces in its collection, the museum features everything from contemporary art to ancient artifacts. Admission is free, so it's an excellent stop for those looking to get a dose of culture during their visit.
